Product Info:

KALIGEL, a gel-based dietary supplement containing potassium gluconate to address hypokalaemia by replenishing potassium levels.

COMPOSITION:

Each gram of KALIGEL contains 200mg of potassium gluconate.

DISCUSSION:

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a common renal disease in dogs and cats, predominantly affecting older animals with an increased incidence as they age. Studies have shown that over 53% of cats with CRF were over 7 years old, and certain breeds like Maine Coon, Abyssinian, Siamese, Russian blue, and Burmese cats are more prone to CRF.

Hypokalaemia, a condition characterized by low potassium levels, is commonly associated with CRF in cats. Potassium replacement therapy is essential for patients with serum potassium levels below 4 mEq/L, even without evident signs of hypokalaemia. It’s important to note that only 2% of total body potassium is found in blood serum, and normal serum values can mask severe total potassium depletion. Undiagnosed hypokalaemia can lead to serious complications in seemingly healthy patients with CRF. Dietary potassium supplementation has shown to impede the progression of CRF in some cases, making potassium gluconate the preferred form of replacement therapy for cats. Long-term potassium supplementation at a recommended dose of 2 mEq per day is advised for all cats with CRF. KALIGEL provides a convenient and safe oral administration option for cat owners to easily adhere to the daily dosage regimen.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

The usual dose for cats is 2 to 6 mEq of potassium per day. Half a teaspoonful (2.5g) of KALIGEL contains 2 milliequivalents of potassium. The specific dosage should be determined based on the cat’s size and the severity of hypokalaemia. Dosage adjustments should be made according to the clinical response and regular monitoring of serum potassium concentration. The suggested starting dose for adult cats is 2.5g twice daily. For dogs, the recommended dose is the same as that for cats, based on weight (per kg).

PRECAUTIONS:

Exercise caution when using KALIGEL in cats with cardiac disease, particularly those on digitalis medication. Avoid administration in cases where high potassium levels may be encountered, such as severe renal or adrenal insufficiency.
