Cats have always been perceived as being more aloof and independent, comparing to their rivals (dogs). They have evolved to be self-reliant and independent animals; however, some cat breeds challenge this stereotype and norm. Here are the top 10 most affectionate cat breeds:
- Ragdoll
The Ragdoll is recognised for its striking blue eyes and their distinct colourpoint coat. The name “Ragdoll” was chosen as these cats go into a ragdoll like state as soon as they are picked up. They have a semi-long and soft coat, and they are more on the heftier side of the cat breeds. They are best known for their docile, placid temperament and affectionate nature. It is best to keep these cats indoors as they tend to get lost outside and struggle to find their way home. These cats are extremely affectionate, calm and gentle, placing them first on the list for the most affectionate cat breed.

- Scottish Fold
The Scottish Fold has a distinct feature, their folded ears! These cats developed a gene that caused their ears to fold forward and after this mutation took place, these cats were then further purposefully bred to have folded ears. Scottish folds are extremely sociable and affectionate cats and therefore they do not like to be left alone. They enjoy their owner’s company as well as exploring and playing games. These cats are on the smaller size compared to the Ragdolls and they have a shorter, easier to maintain, coat.

- Sphynx
Sphynx cats are easily recognised through their hairless bodies and wrinkled faces. Due to these cats having no bodily hair, they need to be kept warm during the colder months. Sphynxes are extroverted, bright cats that love human interaction. Some say that owning a Sphynx is like owning a living, breathing hot water bottle. They love to cuddle and if they could, they will lay on your lap all day.

- Maine Coon
Main Coon cats are known as the Great Danes of the cat world. They are easily recognisable with their long fur, pointy ears and their enormous size bodies. The males weigh between a whopping 8 to 10kg, where the females weigh between 5 to 6kg. The largest ever recorded Maine Coon, named Mymains Stewart Gilligan (aka Stewie), measured to 123.19cm in length! Despite these cats’ enormous size, they are the biggest goofballs to exist. These cats love being a part of all the family happenings, whether that means lounging around on the couch or sitting at the table for dinner. They absolutely love human affection and interaction, therefore making them the perfect family pet!

- Persian
The Persian cat is a long-haired breed of cat characterised by a round face and short muzzle. They have a calm and affectionate temperament, but they are not very energetic. These cats are happy to lounge around on the couch whilst receiving ear scratches and gentle pets from their owners.

- Siamese
The Siamese has a distinct colour pattern with striking blue eyes which makes it very easily recognisable. Should you want to bring a Siamese into your household, be prepared to have long conversations with your very vocal kitty! These cats are extremely sociable, and they enjoy human interaction. These cats are excellent hunters, and they love to explore and wonder around, so it is best to keep them indoors where it is safe.

- Bombay
This breed is still relatively rare over the world, especially in North America, but it has a dedicated following. Bombay owners love the fact that these cats are so affectionate, loving and people orientated. Their sleek, black coat and stunning copper eyes make them stand out among some other breeds. Once you meet a clever, cute, and cuddly Bombay, you’ll be hooked.

- Tonkinese
The Tonkinese have very similar looks compared to the Siamese. They both have striking blue eyes with a dun, brown and black coat. Breeders wanted an intelligent cat but less vocal than the Siamese so therefore, they created the Tonkinese. The Tonkinese is a result of a cross breed between the Siamese and the Burmese cat which led to the creation of the Tonkinese. These cats ultimately love their humans and human companionship. They are known for being friendly, active and exceptionally affection where they will even demand your attention.

- American Shorthair
The United States’ housecat… These cats are extremely popular pets in North America, primarily due to their affectionate personalities and distinct coats that come in a variety of colours. American Shorthairs are very adaptable, making them great pets for households with growing children or those who are constantly on the move. These cats absolutely love attention as well as being held, (which other cats don’t enjoy that much).

Birman
Birman’s exude elegance! They have piercing, blue eyes and a long silky coat who also adores attention. Just like the American Shorthair, this cat breed loves to be around people, and they are highly adaptable to any type of home. Birmans are friendly with anyone and everything, including other pets. They like to play with any companions, no matter their breed.
